To get ahead in the business world, you need to make sure that you stand out in the office. You do not want it to be too obvious or overbearing, but you need to make sure that people notice you. This can lead to promotions, raises and all sorts of other connections that can help your career.

1. Arrive Early and Leave Late

Most people try to get to work at the last minute, often calling to say that traffic is going to make them slightly late, and they are running for the door as soon as the clock hits five. Even showing up ten minutes early and leaving just ten minutes late shows your boss that you are dedicated to the job, not yourself.

2. Have an Uncluttered Work Area

Your desk is naturally going to get covered in papers during the day. Every two hours, just take five minutes to straighten up. This makes it look like you are on top of your work, rather than running behind, even though you may be getting exactly as much done as a coworker with a messy workspace.

3. Adhere to the Dress Code

After you have been on the job for a few years, you may be tempted to let your adherence to the dress code slip a bit. They know what you can offer, so they are not going to fire you over an untucked shirt or a missing tie. However, sticking to it makes you look sharp and professional.

4. Ask Questions

Don’t ask too many questions or it will look like you have no idea what is going on, but make it a point to ask at least one intelligent question at meetings with your boss. This shows that you are paying attention and that you are eager to learn more.

5. Carry Professional Accessories

The things you carry with you on a daily basis almost become part of your wardrobe, so you need them to be sleek and professional. Think about getting a fashionable case for your phone, a rustic leather notebook, or a new watch. The little details make the outfit.

If you do these things, you can really stand out, but not in a way that says that you are trying too hard to be noticed. It will be subtle enough to catch your boss’s eye without being overbearing, and he will think of you first when he wants to promote someone from within the organization.
